There are 2 options you have when setting up incoming emails.

IMAP is a newer protocol and is the preferred method, POP is the more traditional method.

The main difference is that POP will by default download your emails to your computer and remove them from the server, the benefit of this is that you save space on your hosting account and wont run out of room eventually.
You also have the option of leaving a copy of the server in most email clients, this will leave a copy on the server, a disadvantage of this is that you will eventually run out of room at some stage depending on how large your diskspace is on your hosting plan.

IMAP allows you to by default access your emails from any computer without downloading a copy of your emails to your local computer, therefor you always have a copy of it on the server available, an advantage of this is that you can access your emails from any computer anywhere in the world or via webmail as long as you setup IMAP again on new computers you will have this capabiities. A disadvantage is that you will eventually run out of room if you do not manage your emails or perform some type of archiving

We recommend you use IMAP, especially since you do not have to worry about Dataloss of emails due to a computer crash, they will always be available on demand.
